Between now and Tuesday, an Ansonia finance official will try to trim about $164,000 from the city’s $61.7 million proposed budget in an effort to avoid a tax increase.
And the city’s lawyer will try to discuss with school officials how to figure out how to budget possible insurance savings to the satisfaction of all parties.
The moves came during an Ansonia Board of Aldermen finance committee meeting Thursday in Ansonia City Hall.

I would like to follow-up on Alderman Lorie Vaccaro’s “false fact” column recently submitted to the Valley Independent Sentinel. There are certainly no shortage of “false facts” floating around Ansonia recently, and none more outrageous than the suggestion that the Cassetti administration has been anything other than supportive of public education.

The Ansonia Republican Town Committee has long been a proponent of transparency in local government.
Our members are responsible for installing permanent video cameras in Aldermanic Chambers, establishing the first active Facebook page for the city, and starting the annual tradition of the Mayor’s State of the City address.
We applaud the Ansonia Democratic Town Committee in their efforts to try to be vocal on city issues. It helps the public to see the discourse.
Just weeks ago, during the height of budget season, with looming budget shortfalls for this current fiscal year, and significant cuts to city services in the upcoming budget, Mayor Cassetti decided to divert everyone’s attention.

Last night(May 11), I attended my children’s play in Ansonia High School at 6 p.m. to watch them perform Beauty and the Beast. It was an absolutely amazing production. Those children, teachers, parents and volunteers worked so hard for five months for this event. It was a full house and they are also performing again tonight at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
Once the play finished, I attended the Board of Aldermen meeting on the budget that the Board of Education presented. I can say it was a very informative and civil meeting with plenty of questions and answers.
I truly believe that the Board of Education of the City of Ansonia is the foundation of our town.

It is imperative that the residents of the City of Ansonia receive accurate and reliable grand list information from the grand list located in the Assessor’s office, in lieu of grand list estimates from Democratic Town Committee.
Unfortunately, the information submitted from the Democratic Town Committee appears to be self-serving and contains speculative projections without a solid basis, which is frankly irresponsible.

We haven’t received a response from Mayor Cassetti or his administration on city finances, but we have received two op-ed responses from Republican Aldermen, Frank DeLibero and Lorie Vaccaro.

Mark Twain popularized the idea that there are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.
It’s really a shame that partisan Democrats in Ansonia have embraced all three in their desperate quest to distort the accomplishments of Mayor Cassetti and his team for political gain. Luckily the facts speak for themselves on the state of city finances.

Ansonia Rescue and Medical Services responded to more than 3,000 ambulance calls last year, in the process bringing in more than $725,000 to the city’s coffers.
But officials with the organization warned Aldermen that a budget proposal they’re considering is unrealistic because it would cut staffing while assuming the service will be able to bring in even more money.

Anyone looking at the city’s budgets and the fallout that has resulted with regard to proposed cuts to our library, youth programs, education, etc, understands the seriousness of what this city is facing. Democrats presented residents with a clear financial picture of the city, where they could evaluate and determine what action to take themselves.
