Foley Campaign Corrects Error On Donation Form

The treasurer from Dan Foley’s mayoral campaign — Foley for Mayor, 2011’ — has corrected an error in the campaign’s Oct. 3 campaign finance disclosure form. 

Campaign treasurer Linda Fusco filed a corrected disclosure form with the state and came into the Valley Indy office in person Oct. 27 to point out the correction.

Derby Finalizes School Budget

Derby Middle School will lose its security guard. Derby’s two elementary schools will each lose a para professional and part of a technology teacher. And the high school will lose a part-time gym teacher and money for athletics. 

Those were among the cuts approved by the Derby Board of Education Tuesday, as it finalized its $15.4 million 2011 – 2012 budget.

Derby And Ansonia Schools To Talk Regionalization

School officials from Derby are requesting face time with their counterparts in Ansonia to see if they can save money by consolidating some school services.

There are no concrete plans for the two school districts yet. At this point the two districts haven’t even had a discussion.

Derby School Superintendent Stephen Tracy said he contacted Ansonia Superintendent Carol Merlone several weeks ago to let her know the concept was being tossed around in Derby.

Derby School Board Talks Cuts

The Derby school board will have to reduce its requested budget by $485,894 in order to meet the $15.4 million allocated by the city’s tax board May 24.

To do that, the school board is considering eliminating another teaching position, eliminating a maintenance position, switching gym teachers to part-time, eliminating a security guard position from the middle school and cutting professional development.

Derby Schools Call Special Budget Meeting

The Derby school board is scheduled to meet June 1 to figure out what the changes to the school district’s health plan means to the 2011 – 2012 school budget.

Last Tuesday Mayor Anthony Staffieri announced that Derby would switch to a self-funding form of health insurance — and that the health benefits of Board of Education employees would now be a part of the city side of the annual budget. Staffieri Unveils Insurance Savings, Tax Board Approves Budget

Mayor Anthony Staffieri pulled a rabbit out of his budget hat Tuesday, announcing that Derby will be pooling city and school employee health care costs to create a self-funded health care plan that officials said could save Derby up to $1 million.

The projected savings was used to restore two jobs that were slated to be cut from the city budget and most likely fund the purchase of new police cars. 

It also transferred roughly $3 million in health care costs from the school district to the city.
