After some 15 failed votes stretching over two meetings, the Derby tax board approved a 3.6 percent increase for the school district Monday night.

Up next for the Derby budget — a public hearing, now scheduled for Monday, May 23 in the Aldermanic Chambers in City Hall.

The $18,374,000 approved by the tax board is preliminary — and well below the $19 million the school board requested to fund the schools next year.

Nine out of the 10 members of the tax board were in attendance in City Hall, where the tax board had been expected to adopt a preliminary budget for next year covering school and city services.

However, after six attempts and a long break, the tax board ended the meeting without a budget.

A discussion between the city’s tax board and school district administrators did not happen Tuesday because tax board members didn’t have any questions about the school budget.

Last month, schools Superintendent Stephen Tracy met with the Derby Board of Apportionment and Taxation to detail why the district is asking the city for a $1.28 million increase in funding to run the schools next year.

The meeting, which featured a standing-room only crowd of school supporters, was supposed to be the first of two possible meetings between the tax board and school leaders.

I only wish the school system reported to me.”

It’s the last line of a press release issued Friday morning by Anthony Staffieri, who has been telling the media this week that yes, he will seek another term as Derby mayor.

With parents lining the walls and spilling out into the hallway from the media room in the basement of City Hall, school Superintendent Stephen Tracy broke the bad news to the Derby tax board Tuesday.

We’re going to present facts tonight that are uncomfortable — and we are going to ask you to increase taxes,” Tracy said.

How much?

$275 per year — or $23 per month on a property assessed at $189,000, Tracy said. That number doesn’t include the city side of the budget, which is just being formed.

The school board is asking for roughly $19 million for the next school year. That is a $1.28 million increase over the budget currently in place.
