A report from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges raises some serious questions as to whether Derby schools receive enough financial support from the community.
The organization’s Commission on Public Secondary Schools released an 80-page report earlier this month that will help the organization decide whether Derby High School’s accreditation should continue.

‘Report Offers Sobering View Of Derby School Funding’

Derby parents, administrators and several school board members Tuesday vowed to “take the fight to City Hall” to get adequate funding for the school district next year.
“We shouldn’t be in the position of apologizing for what it costs to run the school district,” school board member Kimberly Kreiger said.
The words came as the school board unanimously approved a $19 million spending plan, which carries a $1.28 million increase over the current budget.

The Derby school board is scheduled to meet Tuesday (March 15) to finalize a spending plan for the 2011 – 2012 school year.
The public is allowed to comment at the start of the meeting. Click here to download the agenda.
The budget will then go to the Derby Board of Apportionment and Taxation, whose members will decide on a final dollar amount to give to the schools.

It’s not looking good for full-day kindergarten in the Derby school district next year.
The program is slated to be reduced to a half-day program, part of a cost-savings plan introduced in Superintendent Stephen Tracy’s proposed 2011 – 2012 school budget.

Instead of voting on a dollar amount to request from the city’s tax board, school officials Tuesday opted to take more time to review their options.
Superintendent Stephen Tracy has recommended an $18.9 million budget to run the schools next year. That’s a $1.23 million — or 6.9 percent — increase over the current budget.
The budget includes layoffs — nine current positions will be cut. In addition, the budget will cut the district’s full-day kindergarten program to a half-day program.

Nine jobs — including six teaching positions — along with boys basketball, soccer and cheerleading at the middle and high schools could be eliminated under a 2011 – 2012 budget under consideration by the Derby school board.
The school board is scheduled to vote on its budget tonight (Tuesday, March 1) at a meeting starting at 6:30 p.m. at Derby Middle School.
