At Derby’s Irving School, The Emphasis Is On Showing Up

DERBY PUBLIC SCHOOLSThe staff at the Irving School in Derby are making strides in their efforts to reduce absenteeism among students.

About 27 percent of Irving’s 340 kindergarten through fifth grade students didn’t miss a day during the first marking period this year.

It is quite an accomplishment given the fact 14 of the students with perfect attendance were considered chronically absent” at the school last year.

Irving Elementary School is a busy place these days, as lollipop drums, Japanese printmaking kits, beanbag chairs and an array of school supplies arrive through the front door.

In a cash-starved city with a struggling public school system, taxpayers should note the money for the supplies aren’t coming from your wallet.

Derby Teachers Nominated For State Honor

Four Irving School educators were recognized during a special Board of Education meeting Wednesday (March 27) night for their nomination to a statewide outstanding teachers” contest — and for playing key roles at a time when the school is trying to close an achievement gap.

Each year the Connecticut Association of Schools hosts an award celebration for exemplary educators in the state. Nominations come from fellow administrators and must include three additional letters of recommendation.

At Irving, New Attitude, New Spirit . . . New Money

As one visitor leaves her office and another enters, Jennifer Olson, the principal at the Irving School in Derby, clears piles of papers off a table.

She’s a ball of energy, anchored by walking sneakers at the bottom of business attire.

Now she’s wiping the table off with a disinfectant. 

There’s been a terrible stomach bug going around,” Olson explains, her voice sounding a bit hoarse.

On, On Irving: Derby School Tries Turnaround

While Andrew Davis was the lone parent to attend the first Community Meeting” at the Irving School back in September, he was not discouraged.

There was an energy in the gym among the students and staff that was contagious.

I was very excited to see it,” Davis said. That’s why I haven’t missed once since.”

New Principal Looks To Transform Derby’s Irving School

Jennifer Olson, the new principal at Derby’s Irving School, doesn’t sugarcoat or try to spin the challenges she and her staff face this year.

Too many children in the school are being sent to the principal’s office. Too many students are being suspended. The attendance rate is lower than it should be — for both students and teachers. Test scores, particularly in math and reading, remain inconsistent or on the decline.

Simply put, the school’s reputation isn’t great. But that will change this year, Olson said.
