Irving School Nabs Crayola Grant

Irving Elementary School in Derby was just one of 20 schools in the U.S. — and the only school in Connecticut — to receive a $3,000 grant sponsored by Crayola and the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

The Champion Creatively Alive Children grant will be used to create innovative, arts-infused projects at Irving, art teacher Charlice Culvert announced Tuesday.

The grant will be used to host visual literacy nights to extend the learning of students and parents,” Culvert said in a prepared statement.

The grant will also be used to expand an existing partnership with the Yale Center for British Art and to create an artist/writer’s workshop within the school’s art program.

Visualization is our first language and when infused into education it promotes innovations in critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication,” Culvert wrote.

The grant was submitted by Culvert with the help of second grade teacher, Maria Melillo, district grant writer Valerie Knight-Di Gangi and with the support of principal, Jennifer Olson and the Derby Board of Education.
