Before a standing room-only crowd, new Oxford First Selectman George Temple was officially sworn into office Monday night.
About 125 people packed the Stephen B. Church Memorial Town Hall to watch as Temple’s friend, state Superior Court Judge Joan Alexander, administered the oath.

George Temple, a 65-year-old former town attorney who was born and raised in the Naugatuck Valley, cruised to victory Tuesday in a three-way race that also saw his running mate, Jeffrey Haney, elected as a selectman.
“I’m humbled,” said Temple, a Republican who wore a blue Temple/Haney baseball cap as he addressed a standing room only crowd of supporters at the Brookside Inn Restaurant. “The town has shown faith in me, and I will never let them down.”

The Oxford First Selectman’s race was turning out to be a traditional Republican versus Democrat battle, until veteran Republican David Haversat stepped in.
Haversat, 33, announced that he would run as a write-in candidate on Oct. 13.
“It’s not a conventional way of running but it has been done,” Haversat said in an interview last month at a local pizza shop.

Oxford Republican First Selectman candidate George Temple leads the way in campaign fundraising in Oxford, as of earlier this month.
Temple, who is running with Jeffrey Haney, has raised $16,393 for the campaign, according to his latest financial report filed at Oxford Town Hall.
The Democratic Town Committee, which is fundraising for its candidate Joseph Calabrese and running mate David McKane, has raised $9,877.12 since Jan. 1. The committee started the year with $2,168.64 on hand, for a total of $12,045.76 to work with during the campaign.

Joseph Calabrese, the Democratic party’s candidate for First Selectman in Oxford, and his running mate David McKane, want to debate Republican candidate George Temple and his running mate, Jeffrey Haney.
Carol Georgette, chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, announced their intent through a press release sent Wednesday afternoon to local media.
Temple, informed of the proposal by the Valley Indy Wednesday, said he would be willing to participate in the debate.
