On Monday, Oct. 19, the Shelton Voters Network and Shelton High School Junior State of America will co-host a Shelton mayoral candidates debate.
Participants include Michele Bialek, Democrat, and official write-in candidate Timothy Bristol, unaffiliated. A third candidate, current Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti, Republican, has declined to participate.
The debate will be held at Shelton Intermediate School, 675 Constitution Blvd. N.

How popular is 12-term Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti with local Republicans?
He was nominated unanimously for a 13th term Monday without even showing up for the party’s nominating convention.
The mayor was actually called out of state on a personal matter, said party chairman Anthony Simonetti, who noted that after 24 years of steady development and stable taxes, voters know what Lauretti brings to the table.

Shelton Democrats unanimously nominated downtown business owner Michele Bialek to run for mayor Tuesday, and the party’s chairman said Bialek’s high-energy campaign will help other candidates on the ballot as well.
In a city where seven of the eight members of the Board of Aldermen are Republicans, they’ll need it.

About 40 Shelton Democrats joined Michele Bialek and her family July 1 to kick off her campaign to unseat Mayor Mark Lauretti this November.
Bialek, the presumptive Democratic nominee for the post, spoke for about seven minutes to an audience gathered at Bricks & Barley on Howe Avenue, reviewing her background and outlining her platform.
She began by noting her and her family’s roots in the city, before confessing that as a teen she had one overriding thought — “get the heck out of Shelton.”

The last time a sitting Shelton mayor was defeated for re-election, a gallon of gas was $1.09, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was hovering around 3,000 and The Evening Sentinel was still around.
That was 24 years ago, when Mark Lauretti, then a downtown restaurateur, won the city’s top elected post in November 1991 from Michael Pacowta, a three-term incumbent.
Two and a half decades later, downtown restaurant owner Michele Bialek knows he has her work cut out for her — but she’s never been one to shy away from a challenge.
