Oh, 1992, what a year!
Steven Spielberg made a bad movie called “Hook” in 1992, yet it still managed to capture the top spot of the box office this week back in the day!
“The Simpsons” aired against “The Cosby Show” this week in ’92 — and lost in the ratings!
The no. 1 song in the U.S. this week in 1992 was Michael Jackson’s “Black or White.”
Fun fact: Nirvana’s first hit, “Smells Like Spirit,” jumped from no. 13 to no. 6 and was the only rock tune (then called ‘alternative’ and later, ‘grunge’) in the top 10.
Here is what was happening in our Valley, as stolen from the microfilm edition of The Evening Sentinel!

DERBY – Members of the city’s Board of Aldermen & Alderwomen voted unanimously Jan. 9 to increase the salary of the tax collector to $78,500.
That’s an increase of about $7,266.
The salary increase comes from the suggestion of Derby Finance Director Brian Hall, who said the raise is needed to both lure a candidate the city is eyeing and, short of that, to widen the pool of candidates.

ANSONIA – The members of the Ansonia Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) voted Dec. 23 to deny an appeal of a site plan application for a solar farm on Hill Street.
The denial is the latest salvo in a long-running battle between Allco Renewable Energy and the city.
Solar farms generate electricity from the sun.
Vineyard Sky Farms Corp, an Allco company, submitted plans to build a 0.99-megawatt facility at 135 Hill St.
The site plan was first rejected by the members of the Ansonia Planning and Zoning Commission in October. The appeal of that decision was then denied by the ZBA in December.
The Hill Street address is next to a 1.99 megawatt solar farm the company is building at 31 Benz St.
