Center Stage To Hold Audition For ‘In The Heights’

Center Stage artistic director Gary Scarpa has announced that auditions for the theatre’s Youth CONNection summer production of In the Heights will take place on Saturday, May 28th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. High school and college students up to age 23 are eligible to audition. 

Candidates will be required to participate in a dance audition and should prepare to sing one minute (not more) of a song of their choice, preferably from musical theatre, using a Broadway soundtrack or an accompaniment track. Singing a song from the show is not only acceptable but encouraged, and singing acapella is discouraged. 

There will not be a reading audition until the callback audition.

The creator of In the Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda, is also the creator ofHamilton, which is currently Broadway’s best selling show. 

Winner of four 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical, In The Heights is a potent reminder of the importance of chasing one’s dreams and finding where you belong. 

The show chronicles the lives of the residents of New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood, and it explores the universal themes of family conflict, first love, the meaning of home, and finding one’s own place in the world. 

This powerful story about family features a Grammy Award-winning score of jazz, pop, salsa, merengue, and hip-hop which serves as a rhythmic and touching backdrop for a community with dreams of succeeding in America while at the same time holding onto its culture and heritage.

The Youth CONNection, founded by Gary and Francesca Scarpa in 1983, now kicks off each Center Stage Theatre season. 

Each summer the group presents a major musical at Shelton High School’s Percy Kingsley Auditorium. In recent years, the group has performed such musicals as Peter Pan, Les Miserables, Legally Blonde, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Thoroughly Modern Millie.Members of the Youth CONNection have also given benefit performances for civic organizations and worthy causes throughout the state, including Juvenile Diabetes, the American Cancer Society, Hospice, the Ronald McDonald House, AIDS Project New Haven, The American Cancer Society, and Unicef.
