CT Makers: Shelton’s Teresa Gallagher

SHELTON — CT Makers is a series of profiles on Connecticut residents who work with their hands. In a world transitioning to more digital spaces, the series celebrates those who create something physical, whether it’s through art, craft or other hobby.

Teresa Gallagher, of Shelton, has placed about 300 different letterboxes around the state. She hand crafted stamps for many of those.

It’s such an improbable thing that you’re going to find these little pieces of folk art in a Tupperware, hidden along a hiking trail,” Gallagher said. It just seems so improbable and quirky, and I loved it.”

The process is a good way to stay engaged in letterboxing during the colder winter months, when hiking is harder due to fewer hours of sunlight.

Gallagher has found more than 3,000 letterboxes since starting the hobby in 2006.
