DERBY — Police said a 20 year-old Bridgeport man was charged in connection to a fatal hit-and-run on Division Street in December.
Antonio Pereira turned himself in on Friday (July 14) after learning there was a warrant for his arrest.
Pereira is charged with evading responsibility resulting in death and operating without a license.
According to police, Pereira was driving a vehicle on Division Street at 9:21 p.m. on Dec. 15 when he struck John Jepson, 61, who was walking near the road’s railroad crossing.
Police said Pereira fled the scene.
Jepson died eight days later, two days before Christmas.
Division Street is a busy commercial corridor and is difficult to cross on foot. After Jepson’s death, there was talk about the need for safety improvements on the state road but nothing’s changed.
Pereira posted a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on July 27 in Derby.
