DERBY — Police spread the word about a possible illegal “street takeover” is heading toward Derby on Monday evening. While the ‘takeover’ was supposed to happen at 8 p.m. near the Big Y off Route 34 in east Derby — all was quiet as of 9 p.m.
Police sent the following statement to The Valley Indy at about 5:45 p.m.
ATTENTION: A “Street Takeover” event is anticipated in the area of 656 New Haven Avenue, Derby on 6/5/2023 @ 8pm. State, Local, and Federal Agencies are actively monitoring & investigating these incidents.
Police asked the Indy to share the notice on social media in an attempt to deter the ‘takeover’ from happening. Derby police and Orange police were visible along Route 34 at the 8 p.m. hour.
The takeovers are large gatherings of dozens of vehicles that descend into a location, such as a busy road or large parking lot. The goal is to clog roads, be rowdy, race cars, and engage in general buffoonery.
The Connecticut Post published a story on June 5 saying the “street takeovers” have been on the rise across the U.S. and in Connecticut. Police said they are dangerous to both the participants and the public.
Hooligans in a Meriden takeover in May attacked a police car responding to the scene. See the news report at the bottom of this story.
The Post reported state police and the FBI have established a “Connecticut Street Takeover” website to report people organizing the takeovers.
