DERBY — Members of the Derby Board of Education recently received two awards from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE).
The elected board received the CABE Board Leadership Award, and the Bonnie B. Carney Award for Excellence in Educational Communications, according to a press release from Derby Public Schools.
The awards were given at the CABE/CAPPS Annual Convention on Nov. 15.
The CABE Board Leadership Award acknowledges boards that exemplify teamwork, strategic planning, and an unwavering commitment to student achievement and community engagement, according to the press release.
“This distinction reaffirms our commitment to fostering an environment where students and staff are supported in every way possible. Our board is composed of volunteers who selflessly dedicate their time and expertise, making this recognition truly meaningful,” school board chairman Jim Gildea said.
The Bonnie B. Carney Award for Excellence in Educational Communications Award celebrates the district’s commitment to transparent and effective communication with parents, students, and the community at large, according to the press release.
The board received accolades for the 2023 – 2024 Derby High School Student Handbook, created under the leadership of Derby High School Principal Jennifer Olson and Assistant Principal Ray Coplin.
The handbook outlines essential policies, expectations, and guidelines that support student success.
The board was also awarded honorable mentions for the Derby Public Schools Strategic Plan and the inaugural Board of Education Community Newsletter, developed by the School/Community Relations and Policy Committee.
Derby Public Schools Superintendent Matthew Conway said he was proud of the board.
Conway said the board’s recent accomplishments “include an inclusive strategic planning process, a steadfast focus on school safety, and a commitment to supporting educators through a tailored coaching model.”
