Derby Schools Ponder Exit Interviews

A subcommittee of the school board is recommending the school district use exit interviews for employees leaving Derby.

The issue was discussed at a meeting Feb. 1 of the school board’s committee on teaching and learning.

School board member Martin Hubbard said conducting exit interviews would help the district get honest evaluations of strengths and weaknesses.

It hasn’t been done in any organized fashion since I’ve been here. I think it’s a good idea,” Schools Superintendent Stephen Tracy said.

Tracy recommended coming up with a set of questions to ask departing employees, including, naturally, why they’re leaving.

Tracy said the interview answers should be shared, in some form, with the committee on teaching and learning.

I think it would go a long way with teacher retention, because now we know what our weaknesses are and we could play on some of our strengths,” Hubbard said.

When we lose people, we need to know why,” Tracy said. They could provide some very valuable information.”

Tracy, with help from the school’s human resources coordinator, will be drafting a set of exit interview questions to present to the school board at a later date.
