Guest Column: Ansonia Campout Offered Fresh Air, Stargazing

CONTRIBUTEDThe Family Campout and Star Party at the Ansonia Nature Center last Saturday (Aug. 9) was the latest in a series of new events to celebrate Ansonia’s 125th anniversary.

Over 25 colorful tents sprung up in the newly cleared meadow behind the Redwing Pond House and pavilion two where more than 120 people participated in a good old-fashion evening of barbecue, campfire, toasting marshmallows, making s’mores, conversation and star gazing with the New Haven Astronomical Society.

The weather was perfect to be out amongst friends and nature, sleeping in the fresh air, listening to the wildlife and waking up to an outdoor breakfast. Those who could stay up late enough, were able to spot shooting stars” from the Perseid meteor shower.

Ansonia Nature Center Director Alison Rubelmann put on a great event and hopes to make the Family Campout an annual feature at the Nature Center. Three weeks earlier, the Nature Center sponsored Ansonia’s first Town-Wide Tag Sale and is now planning their third ANSONIA 125 event.

Allison and Melissa Torres, Ansonia’s 125th anniversary event coordinator, are currently mapping out plans for another enjoyable, outdoor family event that will take place in September at the Ansonia Riverwalk. Aside from walking the walk, initial discussions have included music, food, animals, fishing tips, vendors, activities for the kids, and more. Stay tuned for further details.

As with any event, the more people who participate in these events, the better they will be, the more they can grow and the more Ansonia can continue to offer its residents entertainment, education and recreation. Please support these events and help to celebrate Ansonia.

Hope to see you at an ANSONIA 125 event soon.
