Jersey Earthquake Rattles Walls In The Valley

DERBY — A 4.8 magnitude earthquake originating in New Jersey on Friday morning was felt in the Valley.

The earthquake’s epicenter about five miles north of Whitehouse Station in New Jersey. It could be felt throughout the tri-state area, including as far as Hartford in Connecticut.

There was no damage reported locally.

The shaking lasted for about four to six seconds, and was similar to when a low-flying helicopter passes overhead, or when a jackhammer is used outside a home.

Seymour First Selectwoman Annmarie Drugonis issued a Code Red robocall explaining the vibrations were from the Jersey earthquake, and not rock-blasting from the Haynes quarry off Route 8.

Ansonia and Derby schools sent messages to parents saying all was OK within the school buildings.

The earthquake was reported at 10:23 a.m. April 5, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
