Second Season For Ansonia-Derby Girls Basketball Underway

Basketball is back for the Ansonia/Derby youth girls basketball program.

The second- year program directed by Dave Chevarella and Patrick Lynch hosted games the last two weekends in Derby against Orange, North Haven, Madison, Wolcott and Wallingford.

The program consists of five teams (grades 4 – 8) of girls from Ansonia and Derby.

The fourth-grade team, coached by Jamie Bartone and Sean O’Rourke, lost to North Haven and beat Wallingford in their two games.

The team’s leading scorer for both games was Josephine Jo-Jo” Sanchez as she averaged 7 points a game. She also collected 10 steals in the two games.

Courtney Musante compiled a balanced score sheet by averaging 4 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals in the two games.

Over the two games, they also received scoring from Laney O’Hara, who also has a team high 10 rebounds and Aaliyah Maldonado.

They will host Bethel this Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Derby.

The fifth-grade team, coached by Heather Landolfi and Jamie Drezek, lost two tough games to North Haven and Orange.

Morgan Teodosio averaged 9 points and Lucy Lane averaged 4 points a game for the team. Teodosio also has a team high 9 steals over the two games.

The team has also received scoring from Kylie Drezek, Kiara Swilling and Natalia Gruszkos. They will host Madison at 12 p.m. this Sunday.

The sixth-grade team, coached by Kailee Hyde, split their first two games by beating Orange but falling to North Haven.

Teodosio, a fifth grader, is also the leading scorer for this team averaging 10 points a game.

Chardenay Rowson is averaging 6 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks a game while protecting the basket on defense. The team has received scoring from most of its roster over 2 games.

Kiara Swilling, Gabby Gavin, Lucy Lane, Kylie Drezek and Izzy Chevarella have all chipped in with points over the first two weeks.

On Sunday, they will play Madison at 1:15 p.m. in Derby.

The seventh-grade team suffered two losses in close games to North Haven and Madison.

Sydnie Drezek is the leading scorer of the team and the entire program, averaging 15 points a game. Her father, Craig Drezek, is the coach of the team.

Gillian Nemec has shown a nice outside touch while averaging 8 points a game. Larissa Rodriguez has 4 points and 12 rebounds in two games and Gabby Stadt is averaging 4 points a game.

Seventh grade will host Seymour at 3:45 p.m.

The eighth-grade team, coached by Patrick Lynch, beat Wolcott and lost to Madison.

Destiny Blackwood has shown flashes of her skill as a point guard by averaging 10 points, 5 steals and 2 assists a game. Judi Palmieri has been a force in the paint averaging 5 points and 8 rebounds a game.

The team has also received scoring from Shamyra Rivers, Alesica Andrade and Sydnie Drezek in their two games.

The eighth-grade team will play the last game this Sunday when they host Seymour at 5 p.m.
