Seymour To Hold Second Vote On $52 Million Budget Proposal

Residents will vote on a proposed $52 million town and school budget for 2012 – 2013 at a day-long referendum May 17.

The referendum hours are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Seymour Community Center on Pine Street.

Residents rejected the first proposals at a referendum on May 3.

Now, they must decide if a new proposal — about $500,000 less than the first proposal — will pass.

The numbers:

The town budget is proposed at $21,356,366.

The school budget is proposed at $30,689,027.

Combined, the new bottom line is $52,054,303.

If approved by voters, it would result in a tax rate of 33.42 mills — so a person with a house assessed at $200,000 would pay $6,684 in property taxes.

The current tax rate is 25.52 27.62 mills. However, for the sake of comparison, the town recalculated this year’s budget using next year’s grand list to come up with a tax rate of 31.95.

Citizens vote separately on the town and school budgets.
