A 35-year-old man arrested in connection to the death of his girlfriend’s 5‑month old baby faced a judge for the first time in Superior Court in Derby Tuesday.
Angel Luis Santiago, of West Haven, is charged with first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault and first-degree risk of injury to a child.
Santiago appeared briefly before Judge Burton Kaplan, who transferred his case to Superior Court in Milford where more serious charges are dealt with.
Kaplan left Santiago’s bond at $1 million, saying he was considered a flight risk because of at least six prior convictions in New York, including a felony.
Two supporters of Santiago attended the hearing, blowing kisses to him from the audience.
Background
Police said Santiago was babysitting Kyle Robinson at an apartment on Hubbell Avenue in Ansonia in June when the baby was injured.
Kyle later died at a hospital.
The medical examiner’s office ruled the death a homicide and determined Kyle died from blunt force trauma to the head.
The baby may have been shaken, according to police.
Kyle was survived by two older brothers and his mother, Kelly Robinson Maresca.
Santiago turned himself in at police headquarters Monday afternoon, after meeting to talk to a WFSB news crew in a Best Buy parking lot.
He told WFSB that he found the baby unresponsive and called for help.
