Who was that kindly grey-haired gent getting on the bus with Derby students for the first day of school Monday morning?
None other than schools honcho Stephen Tracy!
Tracy, superintendent being his official title, rode the bus yesterday as a way to see Derby through the eyes of his bus drivers.
It was a surprise for some of the youngsters and parents waiting for buses on day one of a new bus schedule.
“I rode bus 53. We went to the Bradley School, the Middle School and finished up at the Irving School,” Tracy said. “I just thought it would be an interesting way to see Derby on day number one.”
What did he learn?
“The older kids are real quiet. I think they were rather tired,” Tracy joked. “The younger kids are hopping and buzzing. Some of the older brothers and sisters were instructing their younger siblings on where to sit and telling them about the bus rules. No screaming, you have to stay in your seat.”
The new bus schedules resulted in some delays, Tracy reported late Monday.
Some buses from the Irving School were 30 to 40 minutes behind schedule during the afternoon run, Tracy said.
