Derby School Board To Meet In Executive Session

The Derby Board of Education is scheduled to meet tonight (Tuesday, Sept. 13) in an executive session to discuss a personnel matter, according to an agenda posted on the school district’s website.

Members of the school board, the superintendent and an attorney will discuss a personnel matter and to review legal correspondence,” according to the meeting’s agenda.

The precise personnel matter is not referenced.

However, on Thursday, Sept. 8, Derby police were called to the Derby Middle School to investigate a narcotics complaint involving a staff member.

The staff member had painkillers in a bag, which were discovered by the school’s principal, Sally Bonina, a source told the Valley Independent Sentinel. The medication was not in an original container, a potential violation of state law.

School officials called police. However, no arrests were made. The matter remains under investigation, according to Derby Police Chief Gerald Narowski.

The staff member in question was placed on paid leave, according to Superintendent Stephen Tracy.

Tracy would not say whether tonight’s executive session is connected to the incident.

Executive session meetings are closed to the public. They are allowed under state law under certain circumstances, such as when the discussion involves:

  • Specific employees
  • Strategy and negotiations regarding pending litigation
  • Security matters
  • Real estate acquisitions, if an open meeting could increase the price

The meeting will be held at Tracy’s office at 35 Fifth St. at 6 p.m.

The public is allowed to attend and make comments during the first 15 minutes of the public portion of the meeting, according to the agenda.

The executive session is scheduled to start at about 6:15 p.m.

Public bodies are prohibited by state law from voting in executive session.

The agenda calls for no action to be taken by the Derby School Board. The meeting is scheduled to end at about 7:20 p.m. (an estimate).
