Derby corporation counsel Joseph Coppola believes the election and swearing-in of James J. Butler to the Derby tax board may have been improper and that the Derby Board of Aldermen should look into the matter.
Coppola said an inquiry is needed because the process that led to his election goes against the Derby Charter. The future integrity of the Derby Board of Apportionment and Taxation — and Derby elections in general — could be called into question, the attorney said.

Upon taking the oath for a fourth term as the city’s mayor, Anthony Staffieri stressed bi-partisanship — along with a concrete way the City of Derby can get some more cash.
“In a campaign, we are either a Republican or a Democrat. Once the votes are counted, we are no longer party members but we are now elected representatives of the people,” Staffieri said during an inaugural ceremony Saturday at Derby High School.

The executive board of the Derby Town Democratic Committee was scheduled to meet Tuesday (Nov. 29) to discuss the ballot error that caused the wrong James Butler to be elected to the city’s tax board.
Democrats erred in filling out election paperwork and listed incumbent tax board member James R. Butler on the Election Day ballot as his son, former Derby fire chief James J. Butler. Click here for our previous story.

UPDATE: Derby Town Clerk Laura Wabno sent word Thursday afternoon saying Joseph Gruttadauria, Jr. has withdrawn his request for a recount, leaving Joseph DiMartino in the Second Ward the only recount scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. on the second floor of Derby City Hall.

Derby Town Clerk Laura Wabno has told candidate Dan Foley, Jr. there will be no recount in the Derby mayoral race.
Foley, a Democrat, lost to Republican Mayor Anthony Staffieri by 38 votes.
