Registered Democrats in Derby head to the polls Tuesday (Sept. 12) to choose a candidate for mayor.

Two-term incumbent Mayor Anita Dugatto is facing a primary challenge from fellow Democrat Carmen DiCenso, president of the Derby Board of Aldermen.

Letter: Dugatto Is A True Public Servant

When considering who is best to lead Derby, as a professional I first want to see how sharp, committed, strategic, and caring that person is. I also want to see results. 

In Mayor Anita Dugatto we are lucky to have someone who understands that managing a city, particularly one with a large redevelopment project in the works, is a serious task that requires serious skill and dedication. Since Anita Dugatto took over as mayor, here is what I see:

Letter: Derby’s Progress Will Continue With Dugatto At The Helm

In the years I lived in Derby, I watched some of the political dysfunction front and center. 

I watched as people were more interested in personal squabbling, score settling and cheap shots than actually fixing the problems that started to accumulate. 

The sewer deteriorated. Businesses shuttered. Same old Derby” was a frequent complaint.

Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom once said, In politics, if you want something said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman.”

I’m proud of Derby’s first female Mayor. It’s with this pride that I’ll cast my vote on Tuesday, September 12th for Anita Dugatto.

I’ve known Anita since she supervised me at WaWa when I was in high school. Looking back, I smile as I realize that I’m still reporting to her.
