The Consumer Protection Department took hours of public testimony Monday on its draft efforts to regulate marijuana in a manner that is comparable to its oversight of traditional pharmaceuticals in Connecticut, CT News Junkie reported.
The medicinal marijuana law that the state adopted last year is designed to allow people with certain debilitating illnesses to access cannabis with a doctor’s recommendation to be distributed through a licensed pharmacist.
Within the first hour of public testimony, it was evident that people on both sides of the issue consider marijuana to be in some ways distinctive from other types of medication.

State lawmakers are moving forward with a bill that would give people the right to sue police officers who interfere with their ability to record video or photographs of cops on the job, CT News Junkie reported.
The Judiciary Committee forwarded the bill to the state Senate Friday. State Sen. Martin Looney, D‑New Haven, introduced the bill and told CT News Junkie he hopes the state’s House of Representatives, where the bill died the past two years, will pass it in 2013.
Looney believes there’s a greater degree of comfort with the bill this year given all of the publicity surrounding the issue — like the case of Jennifer Gondola, an Ansonia woman arrested in New Haven last summer after refusing to turn over her cell phone while recording an arrest.

With the ink barely dry on Connecticut’s new gun law, several gun rights groups have announced plans explore legal challenges to the new restrictions, CT News Junkie reported Thursday.
Flanked by families of some of those murdered at a Newtown elementary school in December, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed into law the state’s bipartisan gun violence prevention legislation at ceremony Thursday afternoon in the state Capitol.
The bill, which the General Assembly passed early that morning after more than 13 hours of debate, expands the number of firearms prohibited in Connecticut, bans the sale of ammunition magazines that carry more than 10 rounds, and imposes new eligibility requirements for the purchases of all guns and ammunition. It also creates the first statewide gun offender registry.

The legislature sent its bipartisan response to the Sandy Hook tragedy to the governor’s desk Thursday morning, enacting strict gun-control legislation and closing the book on months of emotional debate , CT News Junkie reported Thursday.
The bill passed the Senate after more than six hours of debate with a 26 – 10 vote. It passed the House on a 105 – 44 vote after seven hours of debate.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said he would sign the legislation, which supporters say addresses the issues of gun violence, mental health, and school security even if it wouldn’t necessarily have prevented the second-worst shooting in the nation’s history.
The legislation expands the state’s assault weapon ban to include 100 more new firearms, creates a new a long gun eligibility certificate, broadens the mental health provisions that disqualify a person for a gun permit or handgun eligibility certificate, and requires gun owners to register their high-capacity magazines while immediately halting any future sales of them in the state.

After weeks of negotiations in the wake of last December’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, state lawmakers have agreed to a framework for a series of new gun control measures, CT News Junkie reported Monday (April 1).
Under the proposal, nobody will lose their right to own a gun, according House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero, a Norwalk Republican.
But they will have to register their firearms and get a background check if they want to purchase ammunition. The proposed bill also adds about 100 more weapons to Connecticut’s assault weapons ban, which currently includes 66 models.
