Griffin Health Offers Free High Blood Sugar Management Program

DERBY The Griffin Center for Healthy Living will offer a session of its innovative high blood sugar management program this month.

Healthy for Life with Elevated Blood Sugar is a free, six-week program designed for individuals diagnosed with either pre-diabetes or diabetes to help them control their elevated blood sugar.

There will be a session held on Mondays, Jan. 20 and 27, and Feb. 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 2 – 3:30 p.m. at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., Derby.

New Chiefs Installed At Derby Fire Department

DERBY — The following information was taken from the Derby Fire Department’s Facebook page.

The Derby Fire Department held its promotion and swearing-in ceremony (Jan. 4) at Derby Middle School.

Thomas Biggs, a member of the Paugassett Hook & Ladder Company No. 4, was promoted to chief of the department.

Louis Oliwa from the Derby East End Hose Company No. 3, was promoted to first assistant chief.

Jesse Marino from Storm Engine Co./Ambulance Corps Co. 2 was promoted to second assistant chief.

Sean Fitch from Hotchkiss Hose was sworn in as third assistant chief.

Route 8 Construction Update For The Weeks Of Jan. 6 & 13, 2025

Work will be in the daytime, 7AM to 3PM, Monday through Friday:

  • Saw-cutting activities will continue, northbound from Exit 15 to 22 (New Exits 12B to 18).
  • Both northbound and southbound traffic lanes have moved to the right shoulder to create a work area for median barrier replacement between Exit 20 and 22 (New Exits 17 – 18).
  • Median barrier and median drainage are being replaced.

Survey Underway At Plumb And Huntington Libraries In Shelton

SHELTON — The Plumb Memorial Library and Huntington Branch are inviting the public to participate in a survey from January through March of 2025. The purpose of the survey is to determine the needs of our patrons. It will ask what we are doing right, what you would like to see changed and how we can improve our services.

To take the survey, stop at either library in Shelton at their Circulation Desk, or visit us online at www.sheltonlibrarysystem.org. The survey takes no more than 5 minutes, and participants will receive a thank you treat for their participation.

TRANSFER STATION & CITY YARD

The City of Shelton’s DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS (CITY YARD) and 

the SHELTON TRANSFER STATION will be CLOSED on Monday, January 20, 2025

in observance of MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY.

It will reopen on Tuesday, January 21, 2025

THERE WILL BE NO CHANGE IN THE TRASH AND RECYCLING COLLECTIONS.

Community Shines Bright At Third Annual Oxford Chanukah Celebration

Oxford, CT — On Thursday, December 26, the spirit of Chanukah illuminated Quarry Walk as the community came together for the 3rd Annual Oxford Chanukah Celebration. Organized by the Chabad Jewish Center of Oxford, the evening was a joyous display of unity, tradition, and festivity.

The highlight of the event was the grand lighting of a towering 10-foot menorah, symbolizing the enduring power of light over darkness. The celebration reached new heights — literally — with the Oxford Fire Department joining the festivities. From atop their fire truck, firefighters delighted children with a gelt drop,” raining down holiday chocolates for all to enjoy.

SHELTON VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT INCIDENT RESPONSES

On 12/23/24 at 3:02 pm the Huntington Co. #3, Echo Hose Co. #1, Pine Rock Co. #4 and the White Hills Co. #5 responded to a fire alarm activated at #100 Avalon Drive. There was no fire. A broke fire sprinkler pipe activated the alarm.

On 12/23/24 at 6:36 pm the Huntington Co. #3 and the Echo Hose Co. #1 responded to an odor investigation at #7 Acadia Lane.
