OXFORD — Attention all Class of 2025 high school seniors living in Oxford – mark your calendars now and “Save the Date” for January 2025! The Board of Directors of The Rowland R. Strong and Edith H. Strong Memorial Scholarship Fund are pleased to announce that the 2025 application for this prestigious 4‑year scholarship will be available online in January 2025.
Annually, the amount of each scholarship award has been at least $8,300 and is renewable for three (3) subsequent years, provided that the recipients continue in a 4‑year degree program at an accredited college or university.
Since 2018, The Rowland R. Strong and Edith H. Strong Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded this 4‑year renewable scholarship annually to two (2) Oxford residents in their senior year of high school who meet the eligibility criteria, which includes financial need.

NEWHAVEN — In recognition of National First Responder Day (Oct. 28, 2024), the Regional Water Authority (RWA) announced it is awarding more than $15,000 to eight local fire and emergency service agencies.
The RWA’s new Emergency Responder Grant Program provides up to $2,000 to organizations that provide volunteer and professional emergency services within the RWA’s territory. The funds will help pay for protective gear, thermal imaging equipment, emergency response vehicles, training and other costs to support fire and emergency services protection.

As Fall sets in, the 22nd Annual Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day 5K Road Race — a cherished community tradition — is fast approaching.
The road race, orchestrated by Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley, is one of their major fundraising events. Scheduled for Thanksgiving morning, the iconic charity road race begins 8 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Shelton, paces downtown and over the Derby-Shelton bridge, winds through Derby, and loops back to Shelton, offering participants a scenic route through the historic downtown areas of these neighboring towns.

In recognition of National Lung Cancer Awareness and National Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) months, Griffin Health will host a Lung Health Fair from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 9 at Griffin Imaging & Diagnostics Center at Quarry Walk, 300 Oxford Rd., Oxford.
The fair will feature information on Griffin’s patient-centered lung health services, including its Low-Dose Lung Cancer Screening Program, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, free tobacco and nicotine cessation program, Respiratory Therapy, and the Center for Sleep Wellness at Griffin Hospital.
According to the 2022 Valley Community Index, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the Valley and the rate of lung cancer death is higher than the state average.

State Representative Nicole Klarides-Ditria (R‑105)was named as a 2024 Legislator of the Year by the membership of the Connecticut Association for Healthcare at Home.
The official announcement noted Rep. Klarides-Ditria’s “willingness to engage the House floor in the Legislative Intent Discussion around Sections 1 and 2 of Senate Bill 1 (that) was of vital importance to our home health providers in that it provided clarity on compliance intent when the language in the bill was quite stringent and challenging.”
