HAMDEN/HARTFORD — The League of Women Voters of Connecticut announced that all Connecticut races for state and federal legislative offices have been published on VOTE411.org, the League’s one-stop-shop for nonpartisan election-related information. Voters will notice something new this year: a campaign finance feature providing voters with insights into the financial backers of federal candidates ahead of the 2024 elections. This VOTE411 expansion reflects the League’s long-standing commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in the political process. The campaign finance data, provided by OpenSecrets, will be regularly updated, motivating voters to stay informed throughout the election cycle.

Shelton Fire Department Weekly Calls For Service

SHELTON — Shelton Fire Marshal James Tortora sent the following list of calls for service for the Shelton Fire Department on Oct. 15.

On 10/7/24 at 8:02 am the Huntington Co.#3 and the Echo Hose H & L Co.#1 responded to an electrical hazard in the rear of #719 Bridgeport Avenue.

On 10/7/24 at 8:55 am the Pine Rock Co.#4 and the Echo Hose H & L Co. #1responded to afire alarm activated at #217 Long Hill Cross Road. There was no fire.

On 10/7/24 at 1:55 pm the Echo Hose H & L Co. #1 and the Pine Rock Co. #4 responded to a motor vehicle accident on South Constitution Boulevard and Steep Brook Lane.

SRH-MS Chapter To Dedicate Revolutionary War Patriot Marker

SHELTON — The public is invited to the dedication ceremony of a Revolutionary War Patriot Marker at Shelton’s Veterans Memorial Park, 38 Canal St. E, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024 at 11 a.m.

The Veterans Memorial Park was founded to recognize and honor the men and women who served our country in the military services. The addition of the Revolutionary War Patriots marker at​Veterans Memorial Park will honor those Shelton/Huntington patriots who served during the American Revolution (19 Apr 1775 — 3 Sep 1783).

The new marker honors those who fought and aided the cause of America’s independence.

Seymour Program Focuses On Horse That Became A Korean War Hero

SEYMOUR — The true story of a small horse that bravely served with US Marines in Korea will be the focus of a Seymour Historical Society program on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m.

The horse’s name was Reckless, and she was trained to carry ammunition and transport wounded Marines from the battlefield. The highlight of her nine-month military career came in March 1953 when, during one battle, she made 51 trips to resupply front-line units. Twice wounded, she was awarded two Purple Hearts — and earned the gratitude of the Marines who served with her.

DAR Participates In The Massing Of The Colors

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, NSDAR participated in the 57th Massing of the Colors on October 12, 2024 at the Collinsville Congregational Church in Collinsville, CT. Regent Buchanan represented our Chapter and Chaplain Cheryl Basztura carried our Chapter Flag.

Twenty-five lineage societies participated in the presentation. Also, members of the SRH-MS Chapter, NSDAR represented two other lineage societies: Honorary State Regent & Honorary Chapter Regent Christy Hendrie attended on behalf of the Children of the American Revolution and Chapter Vice Regent Deb Heim attended on behalf of the Daughters of the American Colonists. Christy Hendrie also represented CTDAR

Rails To Back Trails Program At Shelton Plumb Memorial Library

The Plumb Memorial Library will be offering a special program recalling the history of the railroad in this region called Rails to Back Trails.” It will be presented by Sue A. DelBianco, local lecturer, historian and author of the novellas The Last Phantom Train” and Crossing Over”. 

The program will be held on Thursday, November 7th at 6:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the Plumb Memorial Library at 65 Wooster Street in Shelton.

Sue will host a slide presentation showing captivating images of the then-and-now of railroad history from Bridgeport, Connecticut starting in 1836 when railroad was king. It will include all the events and industry that surrounded the railroad.

Autumn Fest Is This Saturday At Ansonia Nature Center

Autumn time is here, and the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center invites you to their annual Autumn Festival. 

Celebrate this wonderful season with the staff and the Friends of the Ansonia Nature Center (FANCI). Walk our haunted trail to the Goldenrod Maze and play games at the picnic pavilion before boarding the horse-drawn wagon ride. Enjoy lunch from one of our food vendors, and be sure to stop by our table to purchase apple cider donuts and pressed cider.

Learn about creepy crawly animals from one of our naturalists, visit the Nature Shop to buy nature-related items, and enter our living history encampment to chat with one of the Revolutionary War soldiers.

Griffin Health Offers Free High Blood Sugar Management Program Oct. 21

DERBY The Griffin Center for Healthy Living will offer a session of its innovative high blood sugar management program this month.

Healthy for Life with Elevated Blood Sugar is a free, six-week program designed for individuals diagnosed with either pre-diabetes or diabetes to help them control their elevated blood sugar.

There will be a session held on Mondays Oct. 21 and 28, and Nov. 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 5 – 7 p.m. at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., Derby.
