About 500 residents will find out tonight if their pleas made an impact on the Board of Finance.
The group of residents — who signed a petition in recent weeks — have asked the finance board to push forward the Board of Education budget proposal as presented by the school board back in January.
The Board of Finance will make its final adjustments to the budget at a meeting at 7 p.m. at the Community Center on Pine Street, before sending it to voters at a referendum on April 26.

Seymour residents could see a 1 mill tax increase next year if a draft budget from the Board of Finance is approved.
The $50.69 million proposal for 2011 – 2012 — if approved by voters — would mean residents with homes assessed at $200,000 would see a tax bill increase of about $200 next year.
The Board of Finance ironed out the line items in the budget proposal at a workshop Wednesday night, whittling the spending plan down to a 1 mill increase.

A private citizen’s offer to personally pay $5,000 for the May referendum may not be possible, First Selectman Paul Roy said Monday.
Last week Seymour resident William Ferris delivered a letter to Town Hall offering to pay for the referendum if the town sent the school budget to voters at $30.2 million.

If the Board of Finance is worried that a proposed education budget would fail at a town referendum because the dollar amount is too high, resident William Ferris wants to put members’ minds at ease.
Ferris has offered to personally pay for the cost of the referendum — estimated at $5,000 — at which residents vote on the proposed school and town budgets.
There’s a catch: The Board of Finance has to forward the school budget as initially proposed by the Board of Education — with a $1.12 million increase.

The Seymour Board of Finance has started to refine a preliminary 2011-12 budget request of $51.41 million — up more than $2 million, or 4.8 percent, from the current town budget.
Robert Koskelowski, chairman of the Board of Finance, said Tuesday he wants to cut that requested increase as much as possible.
“We can’t have the budget increase over $2 million. People just can’t afford it,” Koskelowski said. “There are a lot of people living week
to week, not just seniors, but all age groups, even the working families with children going to schools.”

The Seymour school district is asking for a budget that funds all current programs — and adds some money for professional development, “smart boards” and cleaning equipment.
The $30.2 million request — presented by Superintendent MaryAnne Mascolo Monday — represents a 3.9 percent, or $1.12 million, increase over current spending.
Most of the budget request is the district’s “level services” budget, according to Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations Richard Belden.
