The town’s education budget will go to a historic fourth referendum on June 10 after voters rejected a zero-increase spending plan by 129 votes Tuesday.
The $29.1 million schools proposal failed to pass with a final vote of 845 – 974.
The $20.25 million town budget passed 1015 – 802.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Seymour Community Center for the town’s third budget referendum.
The Community Center is located on Pine Street in Seymour.
All registered voters and residents owning taxable property in Seymour are eligible to vote in the referendum.

The finance board trimmed slightly more than $1 million from the 2010 – 2011 proposed budget Tuesday.
The budget has been rejected twice by voters. It goes to the public one more time, May 25.
The latest version of the budget carries a tax increase of just under 1 mill — 0.98.
A property assessed at $200,000 would see a tax bill increase of $196 next year.

The town’s Board of Finance is examining whether to trim the town and school budgets by another $1 million.
Voters have twice rejected the 2010 – 2011 spending plans for the town and school district.
Another vote is scheduled for May 25.

Update: According to the town’s website, the third budget vote is now scheduled for Tuesday, May 25, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Seymour Community Center.

The finance board wants more time before making cuts to next year’s budget, which has been twice rejected by voters.
A third referendum is scheduled for May 18.
However, at the suggestion of former First Selectman Robert Koskelowski, the finance board Wednesday voted unanimously to ask current First Selectman Paul Roy to ask the Board of Selectmen to postpone the third referendum to a later date.

Voters Thursday rejected both the town and school budget proposals and now the Board of Finance is looking to make “some very painful cuts.”
The $50.72 million proposal would have increased tax bills by 8.4 percent.
Town officials Thursday attributed the vote to the bad economy.
