The region’s largest grantmaker and permanent endowment, announced Monday about $5 million in grants to 79 nonprofits serving the Greater New Haven region.

Birmingham Group Health Services is calling it quits.
The nonprofit agency has created a non-smoking campus at its properties on Main and East Main streets in downtown Ansonia.
“The purpose is to lead the cause against a preventive disease that leads to death,” said Pamela Mautte, director of Valley Substance Abuse Action Council (VSAAC).

The Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) of the Valley United Way, and Mr. Jack Brady of Ansonia, were recently honored as recipients of Birmingham Group Health Services, Inc.’s (BGHS) Good Neighbor Awards at the organization’s Annual Meeting on October 20th.
The BGHS Good Neighbor Awards are presented annually to a corporation/business and an individual who have shown outstanding support of BGHS and the individuals and families that the organization serves.

Susan Omilian was already a long-time advocate for women victimized by domestic violence when a phone call from her sister-in-law in October 1999 made her work far more personal.
“It’s Maggie,” the sister-in-law said, referring to Omilian’s niece, then a 19-year-old sophomore at Kalamazoo College in Michigan. “She’s been shot. She’s dead.”

Folks from as far away as Brooklyn came to Derby bright and early Saturday morning to participate in Griffin Hospital’s Center for Cancer Care Second Annual 5K Walk-Run.
Proceeds from the event will go toward creating a Comprehensive Breast Wellness Center at Griffin Hospital.
