This Containment Boom Needs A Home

Photo: Jay JafferWhen Jay Jaffer took his evening kayak ride Wednesday, he noticed a tangled mess in the middle of the Naugatuck River. 

Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be one of those tube-like things emergency crews throw into the water to contain oil spills and other liquid hazmats — a containment boom.”

That freaked Jaffer out a bit. Were there chemicals in it? Wasn’t it supposed to be containing something somewhere? Did anyone know it had gone missing?

Those were the words Thursday of ex-Derby Alderman Sam Rizzitelli, on the witness stand for a fourth day in the federal housing discrimination case Home, Inc. and Valley Housing Limited Partnership versus the City of Derby.

Grants Funds Ansonia Domestic Violence Program

Police officers see victims of domestic abuse first.

That simple notion led to the development of a program in Maryland to help bring those victims to social services sooner — before the abuse escalates. 

Now, thanks to a grant from the Katharine Matthies Foundation, the Ansonia Police Department and The Umbrella Domestic Violence program will join together this year to implement the program in Ansonia.

More Towns to Benefit From VSAAC’s Substance Abuse Prevention Efforts

The Valley Substance Abuse Action Council (VSAAC) is expanding its reach, and its prevention programs, to the Greater New Haven area — thanks to a dissolution and reorganization of the South Central Connecticut Regional Action Council (SCCRAC) that gives VSAAC oversight of prevention efforts in New Haven, West Haven, Orange, Milford, Bethany, and Woodbridge.
