Griffin Receives Stroke Designation

Griffin Hospital is now an official, state-designated Primary Stroke Center.”

The hospital received the designation after meeting the state Department of Health’s requirements to improve stroke care.

Griffin officials received the designation during a ceremony Friday from Gary St. Amand, a health program associate with the Department of Health’s Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program.”

‘Rally In The Valley’ Has Already Raised $100,000

The Rally in the Valley” began Thursday night as campaign members, community leaders and the public flooded the lobby of Shelton Intermediate School. 

The campaign is asking the community to raise $1 million to help create The Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital. 

Organizers are hoping the community can come up with 50 percent of the estimated $2 million price tag.

Derby Youth Services Bureau Receives United Way Grant To Educate Parents

The Derby Youth Services Bureau was awarded $3,000 for an educational program for parents of Derby students entering middle and high school.

Parents are invited to participate in a two-night workshop to be held at Derby Middle School on May 4 and May 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Help Without Pressing A Button

A new feature has been added to Griffin Hospital’s Lifeline” service, hospital officials announced.

Griffin offers residents Philips Lifeline, a medical alert service available through a subscription. It is designed for older people who live alone. 

The device is worn like a necklace. If the person falls or suffers some other medical condition, they are able, through the push of a button, to be put in contact with a representative who can get them help.

Now the service offers AutoAlert” to the Lifeline program. AutoAlert uses internal senses when a person falls — and can automatically place a call for help, even if the person is unable to press the button.

Bowl-A-Thon Raises $91,000

The numbers were called out and hit the audience hard like bowling balls smacking pins — 240 teams registered with 1,200 bowlers, and a whopping $91,390 raised.

Those were the results announced Friday at John J. Sullivan’s on Wakelee Avenue, where Birmingham Group Health Services held its 22nd Annual Bowl-2-Benefit Awards Reception.
