ANSONIA – Dozens turned out at Ansonia’s Veterans Park on Dec. 6 to commemorate the 83rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, which killed nearly 2,400 Americans and triggered the nation’s entry into World War II.
Longtime former Alderman Peter J. Danielczuk led the annual ceremony to remember the events of Dec. 7, 1941, when the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on the Pearl Harbor Navy base in Hawaii that killed 2,393 people and injured 1,178 more.
In the years following that date, Ansonians answered the call to action, with 70 service members from the city paying the ultimate price over the course of the war.
ANSONIA-DERBY — State officials announced that money is being allocated to two economic redevelopment projects in Ansonia and Derby.
Ansonia is getting $200,000 to go toward the Ansonia Opera House, a performing arts venue at 100 Main Street that closed in 1971. Prior to that, it was used for everything from roller skating to high school graduations.
Mayor David Cassetti’s administration created the Ansonia Opera House Committee to figure out how to restore and repurpose the building.
The Ansonia Holiday Marketplace will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Armory Building (5 State St.) on Saturday, Dec. 7. The flyer above was submitted by Rich DiCarlo.
There will be crafters and vendors at the marketplace. There will be a visit from Santa, and kids will receive a bell from Santa’s sleigh.
