Griffin Health Offers Free Tobacco Cessation Programs

DERBY Griffin Health offers education, advice and support to help individuals prepare to quit smoking with an upcoming session of its free tobacco and nicotine cessation program.

That’s It – Learn to Quit” teaches a variety of methods to help individuals quit smoking over the course of six weekly meetings. There will be sessions at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., Derby, on Mondays Jan. 13, 20, and 27, and Feb. 3, 10 and 17 from 5:30 – 7 p.m., and on Mondays Jan. 20 and 27, and Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 2 – 3:30 p.m.

Route 8 Construction Update For Weeks Of Dec. 16, 23 & 30, 2024

For the week of Dec. 16, nighttime work will continue from 6PM to 6AM:

  • Nighttime operations will typically occur Sunday night through Thursday night.
  • Saw-cutting and concrete pavement repair activities will continue, northbound from Exit 15 to 22 (New Exits 12B to 18).
  • Both northbound and southbound traffic lanes have moved to the right shoulder to create a work area for median barrier replacement between Exit 20 and 22 (New Exits 17 – 18).
  • Median barrier and median drainage are being replaced.
  • There is no upcoming daytime work.

Sex Offender From Derby Gets 11 Years In Federal Prison

HARTFORD – A sex offender from Derby was sent to federal prison for 11 years on Dec. 11 after being caught for the third time with child pornography.

Michael Szwarc will be on supervised release for 25 years when he gets out of prison, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney Vanessa Roberts Avery’s office.

Szwarc, 36, was previously convicted in 2013 and 2022 on charges connected to child pornography.

Father Of Victim In Hammer Attack Says Suspect Begged To Be Killed

DERBY – A resident accused of attacking his neighbor with a hammer is next scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 19.

Andrew Fogarty, of Derby, was arraigned Friday (Dec. 6) on charges of home invasion and second-degree assault. Both charges are felonies. Fogarty was also charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.

The charges come from an incident that happened at about 3 a.m. Dec. 6, when Derby police were sent to 1015 Roosevelt Drive for a reported house fire. Fogarty owns the house at that address and lives with two roommates, one of whom was home, police said.

Fire Marshal Investigating House Fire In Derby

DERBY — The fire marshal’s office is investigating what caused a house fire on Roosevelt Drive Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to a report of a house fire at Roosevelt Drive and Buckingham Road at 2:57 a.m. Dec. 6, according to a Facebook post from the Derby Fire Department.

The initial call reported a garage fire. The first units on scene confirmed there was a fire and saw heavy smoke coming from the house.

Ansonia and Shelton firefighters were called to the scene.

There was no word on injuries. Firefighters were on scene for about two hours.

The Red Cross was contacted because the home isn’t habitable.

Walk Through Of Derby's Opera House Scheduled

DERBY — Firms interested in creating a comprehensive plan for the restoration of The Sterling Opera House have the chance to inspect the building at 10 a.m. on Dec. 16.

The optional walk through is part of the request for proposals” (RFP) the Derby Board of Aldermen & Alderwomen voted to publish on Nov. 20. The document is a solicitation for firms to create a comprehensive assessment of current operational requirements and necessary capital improvements to the Sterling Opera House.”

The ultimate goal is to find out what specific work is needed to repair the building so that it can be used again.

Derby Mayor Donates $500 To Derby Pop Warner Cheer

DERBY – Mayor Joseph DiMartino proudly attended the Derby Pop Warner Show-Off event to present a generous $500 check to Derby Pop Warner President Melissa Mongillo. 

This contribution will support the organization’s talented young athletes as they prepare to compete in the prestigious Pop Warner Cheerleading Finals during the week of December 9, 2024.

The donation will help defray expenses for the Tiny Mites, Mighty Mites, and Junior Peewees teams as they represent Derby on the national stage.
