DERBY – A resident accused of attacking his neighbor with a hammer is next scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 19.
Andrew Fogarty, of Derby, was arraigned Friday (Dec. 6) on charges of home invasion and second-degree assault. Both charges are felonies. Fogarty was also charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.
The charges come from an incident that happened at about 3 a.m. Dec. 6, when Derby police were sent to 1015 Roosevelt Drive for a reported house fire. Fogarty owns the house at that address and lives with two roommates, one of whom was home, police said.
DERBY — The fire marshal’s office is investigating what caused a house fire on Roosevelt Drive Friday morning.
Firefighters responded to a report of a house fire at Roosevelt Drive and Buckingham Road at 2:57 a.m. Dec. 6, according to a Facebook post from the Derby Fire Department.
The initial call reported a garage fire. The first units on scene confirmed there was a fire and saw heavy smoke coming from the house.
Ansonia and Shelton firefighters were called to the scene.
There was no word on injuries. Firefighters were on scene for about two hours.
The Red Cross was contacted because the home isn’t habitable.

DERBY — Firms interested in creating a comprehensive plan for the restoration of The Sterling Opera House have the chance to inspect the building at 10 a.m. on Dec. 16.
The optional walk through is part of the “request for proposals” (RFP) the Derby Board of Aldermen & Alderwomen voted to publish on Nov. 20. The document is a solicitation for firms to create “a comprehensive assessment of current operational requirements and necessary capital improvements to the Sterling Opera House.”
The ultimate goal is to find out what specific work is needed to repair the building so that it can be used again.

DERBY – As the holiday season unfolds, St. Vincent de Paul of the Valley is seeing an outpouring of generosity from the local community. Among its supporters is St. Michael’s Catholic War Veterans Post 1562, which recently delivered much-needed contributions to help the organization continue its vital mission of aiding families in need.
“We are so grateful for the support of organizations like St. Michael’s,” said Remy Kocurek, Executive Director of St. Vincent de Paul of the Valley. “This is a time of year when the need is particularly great, and their help ensures we can continue providing assistance to those who rely on us.”
ANSONIA-DERBY — State officials announced that money is being allocated to two economic redevelopment projects in Ansonia and Derby.
Ansonia is getting $200,000 to go toward the Ansonia Opera House, a performing arts venue at 100 Main Street that closed in 1971. Prior to that, it was used for everything from roller skating to high school graduations.
Mayor David Cassetti’s administration created the Ansonia Opera House Committee to figure out how to restore and repurpose the building.

DERBY — The members of the Derby Board of Aldermen & Alderwomen voted to waive a rental fee so that the St. Joseph High School football team can use Lou DeFilippo Field for a playoff game — but not before two officials said the city isn’t following the procedure it established to rent the multi-million dollar field.
“An application should be filled out. That should be presented to us and then we vote on that,” Alderwoman Sara Widomski said. “This process needs to be changed. It hasn’t worked, and the staff has not been doing its job to bring us information.”
