Speeder Causes Route 8 Wreck

A driver going too fast for the wintry conditions on Route 8 triggered two crashes in Derby Sunday night.

The vehicle was heading north at 10:41 p.m. when the driver lost control of the car and slammed into a jersey barrier, according to an accident information summary released Monday afternoon by state police.

The offending vehicle was hit by a second vehicle, which, in turn, was struck by a third vehicle. One person was taken to Waterbury Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Then, at 11:21 p.m., a tractor-trailer slowing down as it approached the previous accident was rear-ended by a Seymour woman in a Mazda sedan. The woman in the Mazda and her passenger were taken to Bridgeport Hospital. Their injuries were thought to be minor, state police indicated.

The Valley Independent Sentinel is withholding the names of the people involved in the accident because some of the identifications in the state police summary appear to be incorrect.

The double wrecks took about two hours to clear.
