NAVEL GAZING: Non-Blizzard Of 2015 Edition

It’s been awhile since we’ve done an edition of Navel Gazing, the Valley Indy’s award-winning podcast, but in the wake of a snowstorm Tuesday that was predicted to be historic” and turned out to be a dud in our neck of the woods, we thought we’d discuss what happened.

First, we take issue with the before-a-flake-had-fallen characterization of the storm as potentially historic,” because any event in the future could be described that way.

But then we get into a discussion of the storm itself.

While direct comparisons to the blizzard that buried the Valley under three feet of snow in February 2013 aren’t directly on point — this weeks’s storm dropped about a foot of snow on our area — we were pleasantly surprised to see local governments reaching out more to residents and trying to inform them of what’s going on.

That being said, there’s always room for improvement, and we talk about what municipalities could do to reach out more.

Let us know what you think by voting in the poll to the left.

One thing that happened early on in the storm — a duplex in Derby burned down hours into the snowfall. Eugene discusses the difficulties of reporting on the incident, and the difficulties firefighters faced in actually putting it out.
