Nostalgia For ‘Golden Era’ Wrestling Is Booming

Valley Sports Rewind’/‘Valley Navel Gazing’ takes a bite of the turn buckle this week with a deep dive into golden era pro wrestling.

Both host Mike Cannici and reporter Eugene Driscoll are children of the 80s, when Vince McMahon and Hulk Hogan transformed wrestling from a regional low budget affair into an international juggernaut.

The WWE, of course, is intertwined with Connecticut because the company is based in Stamford. WWE executive Linda McMahon twice ran for U.S. Senate, though the Valley Indy could not help but ask her about George the Animal Steele during a campaign stop in Ansonia in 2010 (see the video below).

Cannici talks about the very recent 32nd anniversary of Wrestlemania III, when legend Andre the Giant faced off against Hulk Hogan, arguably the best-known wrestler in the history of the sport (check out the video below from the awesome HBO Andre the Giant documentary).

Cannici remembers seeing local tapings of the old WWF shows, while Driscoll reveals he still holds a grudge against Tito Santana for not signing an autograph sometime around 1984.

The pair also reference this article about the buildup to Wrestlemania III, and touch upon a new docu-series from VICE, the trailer for which can be viewed below.
