A 32-year-old Seymour man who engaged police in a standoff Tuesday left the Griffin Hospital psychiatric ward without permission Wednesday morning.
Derby police were called at 8:30 a.m. to help locate the man, who has not been identified.
He was found shortly after in Ansonia, and brought back to Griffin Hospital, according to Derby Police Lt. Salvatore Frosceno.
The man is in the custody of Griffin Hospital while Seymour police seek an arrest warrant for the standoff, Seymour Sgt. Richard Gittings said Wednesday.
It is not a crime to leave the psychiatric ward, Gittings said.
However, if patients leave against medical advice, the Derby Police Department is often called to assist the hospital in locating and returning them, Frosceno said.
“No staff member was hurt or involved in a sense that police would need to follow up,” Frosceno said. “It appears as if he just left against medical advice.”
The man was found a couple blocks away in Ansonia. A call seeking comment was left with Ansonia police.
The Standoff
Seymour police responded to a condo unit in the Balance Rock condominiums Tuesday afternoon after someone came to the police department and reported that the suspect was sending threatening text messages that he wanted to kill his girlfriend and himself, according to Gittings.
Police responded, but the man wouldn’t let them in the house, and began threatening police, Gittings said.
The man appeared to have a gun. He was holding an item under a shirt and pointing it at police and threatening them. It turned out he did not have weapons in the house, Gittings said.
Police were able to use a Taser on the man when he opened a ground-level sliding door. He remained combative, Gittings said, and the police dog was used. Seymour police also used pepper spray to subdue him. The man was alone in the home during the incident.
The suspect was taken to Griffin Hospital psychiatric ward Tuesday afternoon. Gittings said the hospital was directed to hold the man with hospital security.
Seymour police are expecting to charge the man with threatening, breach of peace, interfering with an officer and possibly other charges from the incident.
No police officers were injured during the standoff.
