Recent Shootings In Ansonia And Derby

The weekend shooting comes after two people were shot overnight Oct. 3 in Ansonia. Police are investigating that case as well.

There have also been a series of “shots fired” reports in the City of Derby.

Derby had a report of shots fired on Hawkins Street Wednesday (Oct. 21) afternoon.

Derby police are also investigating confirmed reports of shots fired on Sept. 1, Sept. 13, Sept. 15, and Sept. 17.

Derby Police Lt. Justin Stanko told The Valley Indy the cases in Derby are likely connected to disputes that have been going on since at least 2017 between various Valley groups — including the 2017 murder of Jajuan Benavides. Derby police recently announced the arrest of two men, including an Ansonia resident, in connection to that fatal shooting.

Ansonia Robberies

Ansonia police have also publicized two recent armed robberies at convenience stores: the first at the Wakelee Mart on Wakelee Avenue on Oct 14, and; a second robbery at S&A Mart on Division Street Oct. 20.

A person was robbed at gunpoint in the Target parking lot Oct. 21. The victim was in the lot to complete a transaction that had started online.

In a Facebook post Oct. 22, Ansonia police released information about a home invasion that happened on Oct. 9 on North Fourth Street.

In that incident, a resident looked out his window to see who was outside the residence.

“When the door was opened four males forced their way in the house, one armed with a handgun, stealing the resident’s cell phone,” according to the post.

From the Facebook post:

The Ansonia Police Department would like to offer the following tips to increase the safety of all residents. If you are not expecting anyone at your house, try to look out a window to see who it is. If you cannot see anyone, call the police department and an officer will be sent out to your house.
If you have a screen/storm door lock it so you have time to close the main door to your home if someone is trying to break in. When completing an online sales in person, come to the police department as the meeting place, we have a designated spot in front of the building that is monitored and recorded.

Anyone with information on the above mentioned incidents is asked to call the Ansonia Police Department at 203-735-1885 or tips can be left anonymously at TIP411.
