Jack Reese raising money for the Shelton Animal Shelter.
DERBY – The Reese family of Derby held a lemonade stand June 29 on the sidewalk near Derby High School on behalf of their best friend Ozzy, an Australian/dachshund mix who passed away in April.
The idea came from Keri and Brad Reese’s young son, Jack, 4, who wanted to do something in his furry companion’s memory.
The family, which also includes one-year-old Benny and another rescue dog Rocco, was hoping to raise a few bucks for the Shelton Animal Shelter.
They didn’t charge for the 20 gallons of lemonade they served but rather asked for donations to benefit shelter dogs and cats.
SHELTON/OXFORD – Valley Shakespeare Festival returns this summer with a lively, family-friendly production of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy As You Like It. This fast-paced, music-filled show will be performed outdoors under the stars at both venues, offering opportunities for audiences to catch the action in two towns across the Valley.
July 10 – 13 at Veterans Memorial Park, 38 Canal Street E., Shelton
July 17 – 20 at Quarry Walk, 300 Oxford Road, Oxford.
All performances begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $20 for adults and $10 for students.

On 6/29/25 at 2:29 pm the Echo Hose Co. #1 and the Pine Rock Co. #4 responded to an elevator rescue at #91 Howe Avenue.
On 6/29/25 at 5:33 pm the Echo Hose Co. #1 responded to a report of smoke in the area of Long Hill Avenue and Constitution Boulevard South. No fire was found.

The Second Continental Congress.
The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter, NSDAR, Inc. reminds everyone that July 4th is a time to celebrate our freedoms our ancestors fought and died for almost 250 years ago.
On July 4, 1776 the members of the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence. Among the signers was our CT delegation – Roger Sherman, Samuel Huntington, William Williams, and Oliver Wolcott.
The Congress announced that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

DERBY – The Valley Council for Health and Human Services and its community partners will release the 2025 Valley Community Index during a free public event on Friday, July 18, 2025, from 8:15 AM to 10:30 AM at RD Scinto Auditorium, 3 Corporate Drive, Shelton, CT.
The Index is a powerful tool used by nonprofits, municipalities, funders, and residents to better understand the needs and strengths of the Lower Naugatuck Valley, which includes Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton.

ANSONIA – The legacy of a former Emmett O’Brien Technical High School student and his love of carpentry will live on forever, thanks to a donation by the Seymour Lions Club.
The Seymour Lions recently raised $1,600 during a car cruise night fundraiser, held in memory of EOB Class of 2018 late graduate Justin D. Castle. The money was used to purchase 22 stainless steel toolboxes, each adorned with a memorial plaque dedicated to Justin, who left the world too soon.
SHELTON — A 45-year-old city resident pleaded guilty June 24 to defrauding the government by using a COVID-19 emergency business loan for personal expenses.
Tony Sterlin Cantave pleaded guilty in New Haven to one count of theft of government money and one count of making an illegal monetary transaction. Both crimes are federal offenses punishable by up to 10 years in prison each.
According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Cantave applied for an “Economic Injury Disaster Loan” through the U.S. Small Business Administration in June 2020.
