The Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments (NVCOG) has published a draft Open Space Inventory map and report for public comment from May 12, 2025, to June 13, 2025. The interactive map displays every open space property across the 19-town region, with information on ownership, acreage, use, and level of legal protection, while the report provides important background and highlights key properties for each municipality. The map and report are available at nvcogct.gov/osi.
The term “open space” covers a variety of undeveloped land used for conservation, recreation, historic preservation, agriculture, or similar purposes. Understanding where open spaces are located within the region, what they are used for, and whether they are legally protected from development helps local governments and land trusts engage in well-informed planning.
The interactive map allows users to click on any open space property in the region and access details about it. Data layers related to endangered species, farmland soils, and demographics can be overlaid on the map to identify areas of interest.

DERBY — The Valley once again showed its incredible generosity during The Great Give 2025, helping to raise a record-breaking $4.2 million in just 36 hours for 543 nonprofits across the Valley and Greater New Haven.
Of that historic grand total, more than $466,000 was raised by 61 Valley-based nonprofits serving Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton. The number of nonprofits participating and total in donations are both Valley records. The increase in donations was more than 8‑percent over last year’s Valley total.
Part of that total includes $270,000 in donations from 27 Valley Community Foundation (VCF) Donor Advised fundholders. In all, 1,783 donations were made during the Great Give from people who either live or work in the Valley, a 21-percent increase in gifts over last year.
THEVALLEY– The Great Give, a 36-hour online fundraiser for hundreds of Connecticut nonprofits, was held May 7 and May 8, 2025.
During The Great Give, The Valley Indy — a nonprofit online newspaper covering Ansonia, Derby & Seymour, Connecticut — conducted its annual “Valley Indy Great Give Livestream” on Facebook.
About 24 local nonprofit leaders appeared as guests on The Valley Indy stream during The Great Give, including David Morgan, the CEO of TEAM, Inc., and Lillian McKenzie, TEAM’s development and communication manager.
TEAM, based in Derby, is a Naugatuck Valley community action agency, operating programs such as Meals on Wheels, home heating aid, food assistance, senior nutrition programs, early childhood programs, the annual “Toys 4 Kids” holiday toy drive, a diaper bank, and much more.
TEAM received about $18.1 million in federal grants & contracts, according to its 2024 annual report.
In this clip, Morgan talks about how a potential loss of funding would impact the agency’s mission in Connecticut’s Naugatuck Valley.
During The Great Give, we will be welcoming more than a dozen nonprofit leaders to our 2025 Valley Indy Great Give Livestream, which you can watch by clicking the play button above. If you want to chat with us during the livestream, visit us on Facebook during the event. Click here for the hour-by-hour schedule.

This week we’re going back to 1992, when NASA’s maiden flight of the Space Shuttle Endeavour launched and the riots that engulfed Los Angeles following the Rodney King verdict have come to an end. People were watching popular shows like “Matlock,” “Seinfeld” and “Star Trek- The Next Generation.” Texting is not a thing yet. Instead, people are using landline phones and pagers.
