Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti’s campaign for governor needs campaign contributions — lots of them.
Lauretti told supporters Thursday that he needs at least 2,500 people to give him $100 each so he can qualify for public financing by May if he is going to bring his tax-cutting, economic growth message to voters statewide in 2014.
About 150 people, mostly politically active Republicans from the lower Naugatuck Valley, gathered for a minimum $50-per-plate dinner at the Inn at Villa Bianca in Seymour to help him launch his campaign.

Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti is running for governor — and even has a Facebook page to prove it.
Launched Dec. 26, “Lauretti for Governor” has attracted 186 “Likes” on the social network by the afternoon of Jan. 2 and a handful of posts of support and questions.
The mayor, who has taken a few tentative jabs at running for higher office in the past, is apparently for real this time.
Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti is considering a run for governor in 2014, the Huntington Herald reported Thursday.
“It’s been in the back of my mind for a number of years,” Lauretti told the Herald about a possible run for governor. “After the November election I will probably get some people together to weigh the possibility and probability.”
Lauretti also considered running to be the state’s top elected official in 2010 but decided against it, citing the “disruption” caused by the trial of developer James Botti.

Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti is still exploring a run for governor, as a Republican.
I have urged Mayor Lauretti “to take a shot at governor,” as I feel he is most qualified candidate, since he has guided the City of Shelton to its present growth, over the past two decades.
I would also like Mayor Lauretti to consider Derby Republican Mayor Tony Staffieri as his running mate for lieutenant governor.
