Ansonia Nature Center Seeking Donations For Autumn Fest Raffle

ANSONIAThe Ansonia Nature Center is seeking volunteers and raffle item donations ahead of its annual Autumn Fest on Oct. 19.

If you would like to help, or if you have raffle prizes to donate, email ansnaturectr@ansoniact.org.

Shelton Day Is October 6

The Derby-Shelton Rotary is excited to announce that our Annual Shelton Day Event is set to take place Sunday, October 6, 2024, from 11 – 5 at Veterans Memorial Park 

Lucy Andrade, Derby-Shelton Rotary President, said, Each year I am excited for Shelton Day as it is a great way to be with our Shelton Family and support vendors, business and school programs. It is great to see everyone of all ages. It’s so rewarding. I would like to thank all the vendors and sponsors that have signed up to date. We still have openings.”

Attendees can look forward to a variety of activities, including live music performances, local food vendors, arts and crafts booths, children’s activities and an adult beverage garden.

Griffin Health Offers Stroke Awareness Events for Valley Seniors

Griffin Health and the Agency on Aging of South-Central Connecticut are hosting a series of stroke awareness talks and free blood pressure screenings for seniors throughout the Valley in October.

The events will feature a discussion of the different types of strokes, the signs and symptoms, and risk factors. Griffin Health caregivers will also be offering free blood pressure screenings and consultations.

The events are scheduled for Oct. 3 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. at the Ansonia Senior Center; Oct. 7 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. at the Seymour Senior Center; Oct. 23 from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Shelton Senior Center, and Oct. 24 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. at the Derby Neck Library.

Ansonia East Main Street Parking Lot To Close For Three Months

The parking lot on East Main Street will close on Oct. 3. Cars parked in that lot on that date will be towed. The text of the flyer reads:

The City of Ansonia will be installing new solar car ports. This closure will be in effect for approximately three months.

Alternate parking is available at the West Main Street parking lot and along East Main Street (north of Kingston).

Daily parking regulations (2 hour parking) are in effect and will be strictly enforced in the downtown area.”

Chabad To Host Oct. 7 Survivor Guest Speaker Thursday, Sept. 26

SHELTON – The Chabad Jewish Center of Shelton is hosting a video presentation and a question and answer session with Irene Shavit, an Israeli woman who survived the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Kibbutz Kfar.

The lecture and presentation is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. The location is being shared with people who RSVP. To do so, visit this website.

It’s an honor for us to host Irene and we’re so fortunate that she has agreed to come to Shelton in person to share her story,” Rabbi Shneur Brook said in a press release. With all the confusing messages, it’s important for our communities to hear the first-hand account of someone who personally experienced the horrors of Oct. 7.”

The event will have added security. There will be no bags or banners allowed by attendees. The event is open to the wider community. Tickets are free of charge.

Griffin Health Nurse Elizabeth Walker, RN, of Stratford, recently received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

Griffin Health in Derby recently honored Elizabeth Walker, RN, of Stratford, with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s mission to recognize the extraordinary, compassionate care nurses provide patients and families every day. Winners can be nominated by patients, patients’ family or friends, or fellow caregivers for their exemplary care.

Walker, a nurse for Griffin Hospital inpatient units, was nominated by a patient’s family member for her continual compassion and support.

FirstLight Annual Drawdown of Lake Zoar, Lake Lillinonah, and Candlewood Lake

Lake Zoar – Beginning on October 19, 2024, FirstLight will conduct a drawdown of Lake Zoar at the Stevenson Dam to conduct its annual maintenance and inspection activities. The normal summer operating range of the station is from 103’-100.5’, and the drawdown will target an elevation of 98.5’. The drawdown will lower lake levels to minimum pond levels and aim to return to normal operating elevations on October 28, 2024, as river conditions allow. 

All homeowners are encouraged to remove structures, boatlifts, and docks from Lake Zoar to prevent ice or flood damage from occurring during the winter months. All work planned to occur along the shoreline requires prior permitting from FirstLight, who can be contacted at www.firstlightpermits.com.

Catholic War Veterans Post 1562 Bourbon Tasting & Cigar Night Fundraiser On Oct. 4

DERBY — St. Michael’s Catholic War Veterans Post 1562 is sponsoring a Cigar & Bourbon Tasting on Friday, Oct. 4 from 7 – 10 p.m. at the Post Hall, 112 Derby Ave., as part of its grassroots campaign to support veterans and first responders in Connecticut. 

Tickets are $40 per person and include cigar, food, raffles, and a variety of bourbons to try. The bourbon brands available include Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, Knob Creek, Angel’s Envy and Basil Hayden. Other drink specials also will be available. All funds raised will remain in Connecticut to help those here. 

Post Commander Tom Voytek said the event will be the final fundraiser of a monthlong initiative, TargetCTforT2T, to raise funds for a future veterans home in Connecticut. For this initiative, the Post has teamed up with the national Tunnel to Towers (T2T) organization, established after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
