Five months and three referendums after Seymour’s school board first voted on a budget for 2013 – 2014, members on Monday finalized a spending plan for next year that keeps most of the new proposals they first envisioned in place.
The board did vote not to fund one of two new teaching positions at the middle school, but other proposals — like a late bus for students participating in after school activities and four part-time elementary-level paraprofessionals — remained.

Seymour voters on Thursday approved a $30.9 million school budget proposal for 2013 – 2014 by nearly 200 votes.
It was the third referendum for the school budget, which had been rejected twice by voters previously.
A total of 843 residents voted to approve the budget, with 644 voting no.

Seymour residents on Thursday, June 6 will vote on whether to approve a $30.9 million school budget for 2013 – 2014.
The referendum will take place from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the town’s community center on Pine Street.
At a referendum May 23 voters approved the $22,045,915 town budget by a vote of 806 to 752, but were less kind to the $30,977,984 school budget proposal, which was rejected by a vote of 827 to 727.

Seymour’s Board of Finance cut $35,000 from the school budget proposal that failed at last week’s referendum in the hope that voters will approve the modest cut at a June 6 vote.
The new school budget proposal totals $30,942,984, an increase over current spending of roughly 1.8 percent.

Seymour Board of Education Vice Chairman Fred Stanek listened to the results of the town’s second budget referendum Thursday — the town budget passed, the school budget failed — paused, then came up with a novel approach for the Board of Finance to take when they meet Tuesday to rework the spending proposal.

Seymour’s Board of Finance Monday approved an overall $230,000 cut to the proposed 2013 – 2014 budget that was defeated heavily at a referendum last week.
The reduction represents a $155,000 cut from the town side and $75,000 from the school side of the budget proposal.
The revised budget totals $53,023,899, with a mill rate of 33.26 mills — a 1.3 percent increase in the tax rate.

Seymour’s Board of Finance will meet Monday (May 13) to hammer out a budget request more acceptable to voters after residents rejected spending plans for 2013 – 2014 totaling $53.26 million by wide margins at a referendum Thursday.
The town budget proposal of $22,208,664 was rejected 735 to 571.
Voters cared less for the Board of Education’s $31,052,984 proposal, which went down 817 to 487.

Seymour’s $53.26 million budget proposal for 2013 – 2014 was officially moved forward to a May 9 referendum Tuesday.
The proposed spending plan calls for a 1.91 percent increase in property taxes.
The annual town meeting at Seymour Middle School on Tuesday did not have a quorum, so the Board of Selectmen convened to approve the three questions that will be on the ballot.
