SEYMOUR – Here are some highlights from the Seymour Police Department’s calls for service from Dec. 1- Dec. 8, 2024. It is a partial list of calls, curated by The Valley Indy.
Seymour police received 202 calls for service and made three arrests between Dec. 1 and Dec. 8. 2024.
DEC. 1, 2024
1:30 p.m. Police charged a 19-year old man from Ansonia for first offense larceny of a motor vehicle.
1:56 p.m. Police issued four parking tickets for violation of no parking order during the Seymour Christmas Parade.

DERBY – A resident accused of attacking his neighbor with a hammer is next scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 19.
Andrew Fogarty, of Derby, was arraigned Friday (Dec. 6) on charges of home invasion and second-degree assault. Both charges are felonies. Fogarty was also charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.
The charges come from an incident that happened at about 3 a.m. Dec. 6, when Derby police were sent to 1015 Roosevelt Drive for a reported house fire. Fogarty owns the house at that address and lives with two roommates, one of whom was home, police said.

SEYMOUR – On Nov. 6 First Selectwoman Annmarie Drugonis presented the Gittings family with a plaque honoring their son, Justin Gittings, who passed away in September at age 31.
Gittings, along with two fellow scouts from Troop 11, had helped make improvements to the Keith Mitchell Forest as part of their Eagle Scout project in 2012. Gittings had built new benches at a portion of the forest known as Eagle’s Landing.
ANSONIA — Police are investigating a shooting that sent a 37-year-old man to the hospital.
Police said they responded to a report of shots fired at 7:25 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8 on Pork Hollow Road.
Officers said they found a victim who had been shot in the lower body. Several shots had been fired, according to police. They did not specify how many times the man was hit, but described his injuries as “non-life threatening.”
Police at 11 p.m. Dec 8 released a description of a “vehicle of interest” in the crime. It was described as a newer Ford Mustang convertible, colored blue or gray, with white license plates.
Police described the crime as an “isolated incident.”

ANSONIA – Ten months after the Board of Aldermen approved distributing $40,000 in settlement funds to Hilltop residents near a Benz Street solar farm, no one has been paid.
City officials say the company behind the development – Allco Renewable Energy – is to blame.
The company says Mayor David Cassetti’s administration is to blame.
Dennis Conway, who lives on Benz Street, is owed money and said he can’t get a straight answer.

ANSONIA – Dozens turned out at Ansonia’s Veterans Park on Dec. 6 to commemorate the 83rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, which killed nearly 2,400 Americans and triggered the nation’s entry into World War II.
Longtime former Alderman Peter J. Danielczuk led the annual ceremony to remember the events of Dec. 7, 1941, when the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on the Pearl Harbor Navy base in Hawaii that killed 2,393 people and injured 1,178 more.
In the years following that date, Ansonians answered the call to action, with 70 service members from the city paying the ultimate price over the course of the war.
DERBY — The fire marshal’s office is investigating what caused a house fire on Roosevelt Drive Friday morning.
Firefighters responded to a report of a house fire at Roosevelt Drive and Buckingham Road at 2:57 a.m. Dec. 6, according to a Facebook post from the Derby Fire Department.
The initial call reported a garage fire. The first units on scene confirmed there was a fire and saw heavy smoke coming from the house.
Ansonia and Shelton firefighters were called to the scene.
There was no word on injuries. Firefighters were on scene for about two hours.
The Red Cross was contacted because the home isn’t habitable.

DERBY — Firms interested in creating a comprehensive plan for the restoration of The Sterling Opera House have the chance to inspect the building at 10 a.m. on Dec. 16.
The optional walk through is part of the “request for proposals” (RFP) the Derby Board of Aldermen & Alderwomen voted to publish on Nov. 20. The document is a solicitation for firms to create “a comprehensive assessment of current operational requirements and necessary capital improvements to the Sterling Opera House.”
The ultimate goal is to find out what specific work is needed to repair the building so that it can be used again.
DERBY – Mayor Joseph DiMartino proudly attended the Derby Pop Warner Show-Off event to present a generous $500 check to Derby Pop Warner President Melissa Mongillo.
This contribution will support the organization’s talented young athletes as they prepare to compete in the prestigious Pop Warner Cheerleading Finals during the week of December 9, 2024.
The donation will help defray expenses for the Tiny Mites, Mighty Mites, and Junior Peewees teams as they represent Derby on the national stage.

DERBY – A Derby resident who stole money from the Adriatic Marchegian Club on Hawthorne Avenue was sentenced to eight years in prison on Wednesday (Dec. 4). However, the sentence will be suspended after Ron Culmo serves 18 months behind bars.
Culmo will be on probation for five years once he is out of prison.
Culmo stole about $97,000 from the private club over five years, according to an arrest warrant. He was arrested in March 2022, when he was 69 years old.

SEYMOUR – The town recently received a $20,000 anonymous donation to help businesses in Klarides Village damaged during the Aug. 18 flood.
Last the Seymour Board of Selectpersons, acting upon a recommendation from Seymour Emergency Management Director Chris Edwards, voted to divide the donation equally among the business owners in the plaza, which is off Route 67.
Fourteen of the plaza’s 16 businesses were damaged by the Aug. 18 flash flooding.

SEYMOUR – The Seymour Board of Selectpersons unanimously voted on Nov. 19 to appoint a Charter Revision Commission.
The members are Kevin Atterberry (D), Tom Gardella, (I), Tara Miller (R), John Stelma (D), Richard Peck (R), Naveen Madivala (U) and John Lombardo (R).
The makeup of the commission aligns with the charter rules that a majority of members can’t be from the same political party, according to Seymour Town Attorney Bryan LeClerc.
