Defense Lawyer Angry At Derby Judge
by Ethan Fry | Feb 8, 2012 6:01 pm
Posted to: Derby
A Waterbury defense lawyer claims a Derby judge has a grudge against him — partly because of the lawyer’s involvement in the so-called “garden hose cop” case.
The attorney, Rob Serafinowicz, filed an eight-page complaint against Judge Burton Kaplan in September claiming Kaplan has “displayed a clear animus and negative bias” toward him that goes back to 2009.
Serafinowicz claims the alleged grudge has biased Kaplan against his other clients.

Some Seymour town hall employees haven’t had annual reviews in years.
Half the town’s employees are nearing retirement age — and there’s no succession plan set up.
And First Selectman Kurt Miller has 24 different department heads reporting to him on a daily basis.
Those were some of the highlights from a human resources review of Seymour town employees. Consultants from the Seymour company, The Human Resource Consulting Group, presented their report to the Board of Selectmen Tuesday at Seymour Town Hall.

Shelton’s Anti-Zoning Zoning Commissioner

Call him Shelton’s own Ron Swanson.
Swanson, a character from the NBC show “Parks and Recreation,” has achieved cult popularity as, among other things, a baffling contradiction in terms — a vehemently anti-government government official — one might think could only spring from the laptop of a seasoned sitcom writer.

Seymour iPads Team Up With Waterbury Symphony Orchestra
by Jodie Mozdzer | Feb 6, 2012 10:38 pm

A group of Seymour High School students will perform with the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra at a concert in May.
They’ll be playing instruments that the orchestra has never before used: iPads.
The performance is part of a ongoing music project at Seymour High School, where teacher Brandt Schneider is using the small touch-screen tablet computers to teach music theory.
And it’s part of a larger relationship between Seymour High School, Western Connecticut State University and the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra.

Documents Reveal Conflicts Of Interest At Ansonia Housing Authority
by Jodie Mozdzer | Feb 3, 2012 3:57 pm | Comments (1)
Posted to: Ansonia, Your Right To Know
While James Finnucan was in charge of the Ansonia Housing Authority, his family also collected rent from tenants in a Section 8 apartment the Finnucans owned, the Valley Independent Sentinel has learned.
The arrangement was a conflict of interest and Finnucan should have resigned or sought a waiver, according to the regulations of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
However, Finnucan never sought a waiver and he didn’t resign until Dec. 28, 2011 — 17 months after Ansonia Housing Authority employee Gwen Archer first complained about the situation.

Ansonia Sees Large Increase In Drug Crimes
by Jodie Mozdzer | Feb 1, 2012 9:13 pm
Posted to: Ansonia, Police
Drug violations in Ansonia more than doubled in 2011.
In 2010, the department dealt with 58 drug and narcotics violations — which include arrests and investigations into drug activity.
In 2011, that number jumped to 141 — the highest figure in the last 10 years in Ansonia. That’s a 143 percent increase over one year.
Police Chief Kevin Hale said the increase is a result of the department’s new Anti-Crime Unit — a three-person undercover team of Ansonia officers who have been cracking the drug culture in Ansonia since April.
