Derby Asks Residents To Check On Neighbors

Power outages at the start of Sunday are down to 142 residents throughout the town. 

As the cold weather approaches we would like to remind you to check on your neighbors, especially the elderly as they are more susceptible to colder weather. If you do find a neighbor in need of alternate sheltering due to a cold climate in the house, please contact the Derby EOC at (203) ‑736‑1458 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The Derby EOC will remain open throughout the weekend to assist those in need.

We still have the Comfort Station’ open at the Community Center located at 35 Fifth St. Sunday from 9am – 2pm. There is State supplied food (MREs), water, cleaning kits and some toiletries available there. Please bring your own towels. Members of the Derby Emergency Management can also deliver these supplies to your residents if you call us.

Storm Info For Valley Residents

Superstorm Sandy is long gone, but the effects of her destructive swoop through the region are still being felt.

Towns throughout the lower Naugatuck Valley are in various stages of picking up all the pieces. As of Friday there were still many people without power in Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton.

And the temperature is expected to dip into the 30s this weekend.

What follows is a town-by-town rundown of shelters and other services available to those without power as a result of the storm. Information can also be obtained by dialing 211.

In Shelton, The Waiting Is The Hardest Part

PHOTO: Ethan FryMore than a third of the city of Shelton remained without power through most of the day Thursday, and with overnight temperatures starting to drop, emergency management officials decided to extend the hours of its emergency shelter.

The shelter, in the Community Center at 41 Church St., will now be open 24/7. In addition, until 10 p.m. residents can get meals ready to eat, ice, and water at Echo Hose Ambulance headquarters at 100 Meadow St.

As the temperatures start to drop, our sheltering needs could escalate dramatically,” John Millo, the city’s direction of emergency management, said Thursday afternoon. I would not expect the bulk of (the city) back on possibly until the latter part of the weekend.”

Firewood Available, What To Do With Storm Debris

Firewood is available for Shelton residents at the dog park on the corner of Nells Rock Road and Shelton Avenue for residents’ use.

The compost site next to Elizabeth Shelton School is accepting, from RESIDENTS ONLY, leaves, tree limbs and brush debris resulting from Storm Sandy.

The hours are Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to noon, through Dec. 8.

Thursday Message From Derby OEM

If you know someone who has medical equipment that needs to be charged in Derby, please share this information from the Derby Office of Emergency Management:

The City of Derby is still working with the Utility companies in order to try and get power restored to those affected areas. 

In the interim, all residents without power should call United Illuminating to advise them that they have no power.

Power Slow To Return In Shelton

With about a third of the city still without power Wednesday night, Shelton officials decided to open an overnight shelter at the Community Center at 41 Church St.

The shelter will be open from 8 p.m. Wednesday until at least 8 a.m. Thursday, according to Fire Marshal James Tortora.

Officials will decide Thursday whether to extend hours based on how much of the city is still without power.
